Primary Problem: Wind Slab
Bottom Line: You could trigger either Wind Slab avalanches breaking within the recently drifted snow or Persistent Slab avalanches breaking on the weak layers lower in the snowpack.Cautious route finding is key today. Search out smaller, sheltered slopes untouched by the wind (where the riding should be better anyways) or keep it even simpler by sticking to slopes less than 30 degrees steep.

We did note two small avalanches along the Carrot Basin headwall from sometime in the last two days that broke on weak snow near the ground. These areas looked to have a shallower snowpack.

We observed many large whumps and shooting cracks while headed up the meadows of Cinnamon mountain today, several of which were large enough to shake nearby saplings. These collapses were likely triggering on the recently buried layer of basal facets. Conditions included warm temps, light SW winds, overcast to obscured cloud cover, and S-1 to S1 precip including steady graupel. Nothing particularly surprising considering the conditions in nearby areas, and we chose to keep our terrain choices conservative.

The Last Word

On Tuesday, a skier was killed in an avalanche in Colorado (initial report from CAIC). Last Sunday a skier was killed, and a second sustained injuries in an avalanche in western Wyoming (preliminary information from BTAC). Our hearts go out to the skiers’ friends and family, backcountry partners, and the rescue teams.
